Protests against the Sexual Offences Act

1991 – gay men protest against discriminatory laws

Activist Ant Howells remembers how the absurdity of the laws governing soliciting, indecency and procuring was highlighted by the protesters:

“This photo was taken just after handing myself into Bow Street police station with Derek Jarman and Mark in 1991. It was for the action against the soliciting, indecency and procuring laws in 1991, where we handed ourself into Bow Street police station, claiming that Derek had procured me and Mark.  The meaning of that was simply that he had introduced Mark and me.  Soliciting was simply exchanging numbers in the street and indecency was if me and Mark had sex at a party, that was indecency, but a straight couple would have been fine”.
